MET LIEFDE BEHANDELEN
Hommage aan Boeli
Aart G. Broek (ed.)
On wednesday 28 of november 2007 the Antillean writer Boeli van Leeuwen died at 85 years old in a local hospital in Curaçao. On 10 oktober he received on his birthday an attention from the Fonds voor de Letteren as appreciation for his writing.
On this occasion a series of lectures were organised in Curaçao (by Sylvia Dornseiffer, Tommy Wieringa, Aart G. Broek and Franc Knipscheer), as an hommage to the author. These are compiled under the title Met liefde behandelen. This was van Leeuwens call written on the envelope to the post office when he send his manuscript Schilden van leem in august 1984. This was after two decades of a writing pauze.
BOELI (dr. mr. W.C.J.) VAN LEEUWEN debuted in 1959 with the novel De rots der struikeling, for which he reveived the Dutch Vijverbergprijs (the current F. Bordewijkprijs). With the novels Een vreemdeling op aarde (1962) en De eerste Adam (1966) they are named ‘the trilogy of a displaced person.’
After his law study and his law practice in the Netherlands, Spain and Venezuela, he had a high function of Secretary to the island territory of Curaçao. In 1983 he received for his work the Cola Debrotprijs, the most important Antillean cultural distinction. After his retirement that year he worked as a pro-Deo-lawyer in the poor neighbourhoods that he named the ‘dark side of the neat Dutch treat in the Caribbean.’ He began to write again and published the novels Schilden van leem (1985), Het teken van Jona (1988) en his famous colemn collection Geniale anarchie (1990) binding a new readers generation to his work.
