AUTHOR
AUSTIN CLARKE wanted to flee at a young age his native island. The British training he received helped him. After completing his education, he taught at a rural school, after which he moved to Canada to study economics and political science. For his numerous novels and story collections Clarke received prestigious literary awards. With The Polished Hoe, he won not only the international Commonwealth Writers' Prize, but also the two largest Canadian literary awards, the Giller Prize and the Trillium Award.
